Ā , we Saved 47 Souls in September!

September was an incredibly busy month for NTASR, full of rescue stories and progress. We welcomed 47 new dogs, including 23 from Arkansas, and partnered with a rescue to help 40 Aussies surrendered by a breeder in Central Texas. Meanwhile, 19 dogs found their forever homes! We also provided critical care to three special medical cases: Peanut, Rhonda, and Casper. With vet bills exceeding $20,000, your generosity helped us raise $10,332 to support these sweet pups on their journey to recovery.

Weā€™d love for you to join us at our upcoming events to meet the NTASR team and some of our adorable adoptable dogsā€”details are below. Your support makes all of this possible, and weā€™re truly grateful to have you with us.Ā

September Highlights & News:

Peanut

As every month in rescue seems to start, we get hit right away with a medical case. And Peanut is one we won't forget! Peanut is a tiny guy around 16 pounds, and had severe burns on about 75% of his back. Ā Our vet believes that these burns were caused by acid being poured on him, or gasoline. We believe his severe injuries indicate he was used as a bait dog. He's now terrified of other dogs, especially when they bark, and is very skittish around people. When he meets someone new, his fight-or-flight instinct kicks inā€”trust is hard to come by after what he's endured. Not only does he bear physical scars, but he also carries deep emotional wounds. Peanut is looking for his forever home now as his physical wounds have healed. He will need a patient home, as he works through his emotional trauma.Ā

The Arkansas Seven / Eleven / Twenty-Three

On September 7th, our rescue team headed to Arkansas to rescue as many of the Arkansas Sevenā€”seven adult Aussies abandoned by a breederā€”and three litters of six-week-old puppies as we could. Once we arrived, we discovered four additional dogs that had been hiding, bringing our total to eleven! Trip one to Arkansas brought back a total of 12. This led to a second trip to Arkansas to rescue the last two adults dogs we couldnā€™t catch the first time & one other litter, resulting in a total of 23 dogs saved.

The puppies have faced some medical challenges, battling severe cases of worms, coccidia, and giardia. So far, the costs for vetting all 23 dogsā€”spay/neuter, vaccinations, flea, tick and worm treatments, fecals, and heartworm testsā€”have added up. Each puppy averages about $550 for their vetting, and many are still undergoing treatment and have yet to complete all three rounds of shots, along with spay/neuter procedures.

Weā€™re incredibly grateful for the support weā€™ve received and look forward to seeing these dogs thrive in loving homes!

We are so grateful to have recruited some incredible fosters for the Arkansas dogs, and we are amazed by the progress so many of them have made. Dogs who were once so timid and experts at hide-and-seek are now snuggling with their foster parents and learning to trust. They've established routines, learned to play ball, and even enjoy going on walks! It warms our hearts to see how far they've come and to know they'll be ready for their forever homes very soon. We at NTASR are truly thankful for all our fosters who invest their time and resources to help rehabilitate these dogs, giving them the love they've never known before.

Breeder Surrender

Shortly after rescuing the abandoned breeder dogs from Arkansas, a partner rescue, HHAR, reached out for help with 40 Aussies from a breeder in Central Texas.

Many of these dogs had injuries, and the breeder recognized that the situation was no longer sustainable and that the dogs deserved a better life. NTASR took in two of the most urgent medical cases: Rhonda (2), who has a traumatic eye injury and bite wounds, and Casper (8), who suffered from a severe prolapsed intestine.Ā

With heavy hearts, we share that after careful consideration, we made the compassionate decision to let Casper go, sparing him from further suffering. During his time with us, we ensured he enjoyed ice cream and treatsā€”likely for the first time in his life. Although his stay was brief, we are grateful that those days were his happiest. Casper will always be remembered, and we cherish the moments we had with him.

Our hearts go out to Rhonda as she continues her healing journey. If youā€™re able, please consider donating towards her medical costsā€”every bit helps provide her with the treatment she deserves.

Chandler, TX

NTASR was alerted to a situation in East Texas involving multiple chained dogs in distressing conditions. The owner, who initially aimed to run a nonprofit rescue, became overwhelmed after funding ran out. In response, we raised $1,500 to provide food and some veterinary care. However, many dogs still require essential medical treatments, including vaccinations and heartworm care, as their living conditions have led to severe health issues.

This case highlights the need for better animal welfare regulations in Texas. Itā€™s just one of many cases we encounter regularly, as we receive numerous calls daily about rehoming and neglect. We appreciate your generous support, which enables us to care for these deserving animals and continue our mission.

Hereā€™s how you can help: Ā

- Fosters Needed: We urgently need foster homes to care for these dogs - share with your friends with herding dog experience even if they are fosters for only 60 days. We have been extremely limited on being able to take in owner surrenders due to the large very urgent dogs that need rescue. If you are able to foster even for a short time, we would be able to save some dogs from heading to local shelters. Many of the forms we receive are due to herding behaviors seen in the breed and small children or lack of time required for this active breed.Ā

- Donations: Month over month, we have been in the red. And we hate to ask so often, but we rely on community support to keep us going. We had a small emergency fund that we have since drained. The medical has really piled up. We have multiple donation options, and every little bit helps us rescue, and rehabilitate more dogs. While we have taken in 47 dogs this past month alone, we have said no to double that number.Ā
